Lagos Welcomes Africa’s Best as 2025 ITTF Youth Championships Kick Off

Lagos has officially opened its doors to over 150 young table tennis stars from 19 African countries for the 2025 ITTF African Youth Championships, which commenced Monday at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The week-long competition the first of its kind to be hosted in Lagos features Africa’s most promising under-15 and under-19 talents battling for continental titles and qualification spots for the World Youth Championships in Romania later this year.
Leading Nigeria’s medal campaign are homegrown stars Tobi Adebakin and Favour Ojo, both of whom expressed confidence in their preparation and determination to shine on home soil.
“We’ve been in camp for days and played warm-up competitions,” said Ojo. “The home crowd, the familiar environment all of it gives us an edge. You should expect the best from us.”
Adebakin, eyeing gold in the U-19 category, acknowledged the stiff competition but remained optimistic.
“My target is the top prize,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, but with God’s help and our preparation, I believe I can win.”
President of ITTF Africa, Wahid Oshodi, hailed the event as a showcase of the continent’s emerging champions, praising Nigeria for hosting at a high standard.
“This is one of Africa’s most talented generations,” Oshodi said. “Players like Tunisia’s Wassim Essid represent the future, and I’m proud Nigeria is leading this effort.”
Deputy President Alfred Bagueka also applauded Lagos’s continued excellence in hosting international events, referencing successful editions of the WTT Contender Lagos.
Competition Manager Menna Elzaabalawy disclosed that 16 events will be held, including singles, doubles, team, and mixed doubles categories. She described the championship as Africa’s largest youth table tennis gathering.
“The winners in the team events and singles finalists will qualify for the World Youth Championships. We’re expecting an exciting and highly competitive tournament,” she said.
Tunisia’s top seed Wassim Essid, making his first appearance in Nigeria, commended the warm reception and enthusiasm of Lagos fans.
“The energy here is amazing. I’m happy to be part of this experience,” he said.
With packed stands and patriotic energy in the air, Lagos is set to witness a week of world-class youth table tennis action.
