Deion Sanders Declares Victory Over Cancer After Bladder Removal Surgery
University of Colorado head football coach, Deion Sanders, has publicly announced that he is cancer-free following a major surgery to remove his bladder. The 57-year-old former NFL star turned college football coach revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer earlier this year and underwent surgery as part of a life-saving treatment.
Sanders made the announcement during a press briefing on the University of Colorado campus, where he was joined by his medical team. Dr. Janet Kukreja of the CU Cancer Center confirmed that Sanders had developed a high-grade tumor in his bladder, which was threatening to invade the muscle wall. The condition required the complete removal of his bladder, followed by reconstructive surgery that created a new bladder from a segment of his intestine. With the tumor fully removed and no evidence of spreading, doctors have now declared Sanders cancer-free.
The diagnosis came during a routine body scan that was part of Sanders’ ongoing health monitoring, following past issues with circulation that had previously led to the amputation of two toes. The cancer diagnosis came as a shock, and Sanders admitted that the news forced him to prepare for the worst. He revealed that he had even written a will before the surgery, preparing his family for the possibility that he might not survive.
The operation and recovery were physically demanding. Sanders shared that he lost around 25 pounds, had to wear a catheter for weeks, and continues to adjust to life with a reconstructed bladder. Yet, true to his personality, he maintained his sense of humor, joking during the press conference about depending on adult diapers and possibly needing a toilet on the sidelines when the football season begins.
Despite the difficult journey, Sanders is determined to return fully to coaching. He confirmed that he will resume his role as head coach for the Colorado Buffaloes when they open their season on August 29 against Georgia Tech. Entering his third season at the helm, Sanders holds a 13–12 record over two years and is looking to build on last season’s 9–4 performance and Alamo Bowl appearance.
Sanders used the moment to encourage others to prioritize their health, especially men who often delay medical check-ups. “Had I not gone in for that scan, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “Please, get yourself checked.”
With the cancer behind him and his trademark optimism intact, Coach Prime now turns his focus back to the game ready to lead his team and share his story of survival and resilience.
