Shettima to Represent Nigeria at 2nd UN Food Systems Summit in Addis Ababa

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is scheduled to represent Nigeria at the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), which runs from July 27 to 29, 2025.

The summit, jointly convened by the United Nations and co-hosted by the governments of Ethiopia and Italy, aims to evaluate global progress made since the inaugural summit held in 2021. This year’s edition will bring together world leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss transformative actions for resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems.

Nigeria is expected to use the platform to advocate for private-sector-driven reforms within its agricultural sector. According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the federal government is championing the implementation of a food systems reform model anchored on increased private investment and the introduction of single-digit credit access for agricultural stakeholders.

Vice President Shettima is also slated to participate in several high-level roundtable discussions on financing, trade, and investment in food systems. In addition, the Nigerian delegation will engage in side events focusing on strategic value chains, particularly the coffee sector, and explore bilateral partnerships aimed at accelerating the country’s food security objectives.

The summit will also serve as a platform for countries to reaffirm their commitments to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to zero hunger, climate resilience, and improved nutrition outcomes.

Nigeria’s participation in the global event reinforces its leadership role on the African continent in shaping policy and innovation for food systems transformation. Shettima’s presence in Addis Ababa signals the administration’s intent to attract global support and align national policies with international best practices in food production, distribution, and sustainability.
