Oshiomhole Accuses Media of Blowing Okpebholo’s Remarks on Peter Obi Out of Proportion

Former Governor of Edo State and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticized the Nigerian media for allegedly exaggerating recent remarks made by Governor Monday Okpebholo to former presidential candidate Peter Obi. Oshiomhole maintained that the governor’s comments, which stirred political controversy, were misrepresented and blown out of proportion. Speaking during an interview with journalists on Friday, Oshiomhole defended Okpebholo, insisting that the governor’s call for Peter Obi to obtain security clearance before visiting Edo State was a matter of simple protocol and not a threat as reported by some news outlets. “The media has a way of sensationalizing things,” Oshiomhole said. “Governor Okpebholo was only advising that anyone who plans to enter the state for any political or public event should observe basic protocols by informing the appropriate authorities. That’s not too much to ask.” The issue began earlier in the week after Governor Okpebholo warned Peter Obi against visiting Edo State without informing the state government. He cited a previous visit by the Labour Party presidential candidate, which allegedly coincided with unrest that led to loss of lives. Okpebholo’s remarks prompted strong reactions across the political space, with many interpreting the statement as an attempt to intimidate Obi or bar him from political engagements in the state. However, Oshiomhole sought to provide context, pointing out that even he, as a serving senator and former governor, adheres to such courtesies when traveling to states outside his jurisdiction. “When I travel to other states, I inform the state governor or security agencies out of respect and to ensure everything goes smoothly. It’s not a sign of fear or submission—it’s just common sense,” Oshiomhole said. In response to the warning, Peter Obi had earlier expressed surprise, stating that he was not afraid to visit any part of Nigeria and that his visits were always aimed at promoting national development through education, healthcare, and community support. "I have always moved freely across the country with good intentions, and I will continue to do so. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and no part of it should be off-limits to any citizen," Obi stated. Oshiomhole emphasized that the matter should not be politicized, especially as Nigeria continues to face pressing national challenges. He urged politicians and the media to avoid creating unnecessary tension that could derail efforts at governance and development. Political analysts have weighed in, noting that the incident may reflect growing political friction ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially with Edo State gearing up for its gubernatorial election in 2024. The Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have both maintained strong influence in the state, and recent events are seen as a reflection of the underlying competition between key players. As the debate continues, observers are calling for restraint from political actors and balanced reporting from media outlets to prevent misinformation and ensure a healthy democratic space.
