Basketmouth Asked to Prostrate Before Performing at OAU, Honors Longstanding Campus Tradition

Popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth was asked to prostrate before students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) before taking the stage for a performance, in accordance with a long-standing cultural tradition observed by the university’s student body.

The incident occurred during a live show held at OAU’s historic Oduduwa Hall, where the comedian, dressed casually in shorts and a red jacket, complied with the request from the crowd. The students, in line with the university’s tradition, chanted and demanded that the entertainer pay homage through the customary act of “dobale” a deep prostration that symbolizes respect and humility.

This tradition, which is widely known across Nigerian campuses but especially enforced at OAU, is considered a rite of passage for male entertainers performing on stage. The act is not viewed as demeaning but rather as a mark of reverence, particularly towards the energetic and culturally grounded student audience, most notably those from the legendary Awolowo Hall.

Basketmouth’s gesture was met with applause and approval from the students, many of whom see the tradition as a symbolic reminder that, within the OAU amphitheatre, the students are kings — and all performers, regardless of their fame, must first seek their acceptance.

The tradition has been upheld for years, with major artistes like Wizkid, Laycon, Zinoleesky, and others having gone through the same ritual before performing on the university stage. Most recently, singer TML Vibez was also made to prostrate before students allowed him to perform.

Reactions to the tradition have continued to stir debate across the country. Some view it as a celebration of culture and campus pride, while others argue that it borders on coercion and public pressure. Nevertheless, for many OAU students, it remains a proud part of their identity one that reinforces the unique atmosphere and cultural consciousness that the university is known for.

Basketmouth’s graceful compliance was seen as a mark of humility and understanding, further endearing him to the student audience and reaffirming his place not just as a veteran comedian, but as a performer who knows how to connect deeply with the people before him.
