Basketmouth Asked to Prostrate Before Performing at OAU, Honors Longstanding Campus Tradition
Popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth was asked to prostrate before students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) before taking the stage for a performance, in accordance with a long-standing cultural tradition observed by the university’s student body.
The incident occurred during a live show held at OAU’s historic Oduduwa Hall, where the comedian, dressed casually in shorts and a red jacket, complied with the request from the crowd. The students, in line with the university’s tradition, chanted and demanded that the entertainer pay homage through the customary act of “dobale” a deep prostration that symbolizes respect and humility.
This tradition, which is widely known across Nigerian campuses but especially enforced at OAU, is considered a rite of passage for male entertainers performing on stage. The tradition has been upheld for years, with major artistes like Wizkid, Laycon, Zinoleesky, and others having gone through the same ritual before performing on the university stage. Most recently, singer TML Vibez was also made to prostrate before students allowed him to perform.
