Arsenal Completes £55m Signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Swedish striker, Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth an initial £55 million, the club announced on Saturday.

The 27-year-old forward joins on a five-year contract and becomes Mikel Arteta’s sixth signing of the summer as the Gunners intensify their preparations for a Premier League title push.

Gyokeres, who lit up the Portuguese league last season with an astonishing 39 goals, also made headlines with a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

His transfer fee could rise to £64 million with performance-related add-ons, pushing Arsenal’s summer spending close to the £200 million mark.

“To come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I’m really excited to get going,” said Gyokeres in his first interview as a Gunner.

The prolific striker is expected to join his new teammates in Asia for Arsenal’s pre-season tour, with matches scheduled against Newcastle on Sunday in Singapore and arch-rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31.

Gyokeres adds significant firepower to Arteta’s squad and follows the arrivals of defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielders Martin Zubimendi (£60m) and Christian Norgaard (£10m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), and winger Noni Madueke (£48.5m).

“I always want to score,” Gyokeres added. “To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters — I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.”

The move is seen as a statement of intent from Arsenal. With Gyokeres now leading the line, the Gunners will be hoping their latest addition can provide the cutting edge needed to go one step further in the upcoming campaign.
