The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has expressed deep appreciation to the people of Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa following a landmark visit to the three African nations, describing the experience as warm, inspiring, and full of promise for future collaboration.
In a message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Khan extended his gratitude to citizens across the continent for their hospitality, calling it “an incredibly warm welcome” during what he called a historic journey.
“A heartfelt thank you to the people of Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa for the incredibly warm welcome during my recent visit,” the Mayor wrote.
The visit, which marks the first official trip by a sitting Mayor of London to sub-Saharan Africa, was aimed at strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between London and key African cities.
According to Khan, the mission focused on fostering long-term partnerships that will boost trade, investment, and shared opportunities for mutual economic growth.
“I’m excited to keep building stronger partnerships between London and African cities, to boost trade, investment, and shared opportunity,” he stated.
During the multi-country tour, Mayor Khan was accompanied by a 27-member business delegation comprising London-based companies specialising in fintech, enterprise technology, and sustainability.
The delegation was supported by London & Partners, the city’s official business growth and destination agency, under the leadership of the Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, Howard Dawber.
The Mayor’s engagements in Africa centered around digital transformation, inclusive economic growth, and cultural exchange.
Stakeholders across public and private sectors hailed the visit as timely and strategic, particularly in light of global economic shifts and the increasing importance of South-South and North-South partnerships.
The visit is seen as a strong signal of London’s readiness to enhance its global presence post-Brexit, while simultaneously supporting the development goals of dynamic African economies.
Khan’s Africa tour is expected to pave the way for further cooperation in technology, climate innovation, education, and investment, reflecting a growing consensus that cities must take a lead role in fostering international collaboration.
