Zamfara Assembly, Led by Speaker Gummi, Blames Governor Lawal for Rising Insecurity

The Zamfara State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Bilyaminu Isma’il Gummi, has faulted Governor Dauda Lawal over the worsening insecurity in the state.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Assembly expressed concern over the increasing spate of attacks by armed bandits in various parts of the state, accusing the executive arm of government of failing to respond swiftly and decisively to the crisis.

Speaker Gummi, who addressed a media briefing at the Assembly complex in Gusau, said the legislature could no longer remain silent while communities across Zamfara continue to suffer violent attacks, abductions, and destruction of property.

“Zamfara people are under siege,” he said. “The responsibility to protect lives and property rests on the executive. The rising insecurity clearly indicates a gap in governance and response.”

The lawmakers called on Governor Lawal to urgently overhaul the state’s security architecture and engage more proactively with federal security agencies and local stakeholders to restore peace.

They also warned that the Assembly would invoke its constitutional powers if urgent steps are not taken to stem the tide of insecurity.

The state has witnessed a resurgence of banditry in recent months, despite several government initiatives aimed at curbing the menace. Residents in affected communities have repeatedly appealed for greater intervention from the authorities.

As of the time of filing this report, the state government had not issued an official response to the Assembly’s accusations.
