PDP Membership Not Compatible With Coalition Politics, Says Gov Mohammed

Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, on Wednesday warned party members against aligning with the newly formed opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that no member can belong to both the PDP and another political alliance. Speaking during the PDP Stakeholders Conference in Abuja, Mohammed described the act of dual loyalty as “an aberration” and said such behavior must not be allowed to continue. He emphasized that party members must choose a side and remain fully committed to it. “You cannot belong to two places. You cannot be a hermaphrodite. You cannot be a man and a woman at the same time. If you are in PDP, you are in PDP. You cannot be in PDP and in another coalition at the same time,” the governor said. The statement comes amid reports that some PDP members have joined the ADC-led opposition coalition, which aims to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mohammed called on the party’s national leadership to enforce discipline and loyalty among its members, warning that continued tolerance for political cross-allegiance could weaken the PDP’s internal structure and credibility. Former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, also condemned the conduct of what he described as “nomadic politicians” who move from one party to another without accountability. He said the PDP should not welcome such individuals without subjecting them to internal processes. “Anyone who leaves the party must go through the proper channels before returning. They must respect the structure. We can no longer afford political tourism,” Aliyu said. Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, in his address, admitted that many of the party’s internal crises were self-inflicted, often caused by members who abandon the party’s ideology. He urged all PDP faithful to recommit themselves to the party’s core values of loyalty, unity, and discipline. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other prominent party figures at the conference supported the call for internal cohesion, warning that divided loyalties could jeopardize the PDP’s future. The leadership made it clear that moving forward, members must decide where their political allegiance lies. The party will not condone dual membership or disloyalty as it prepares to rebuild and reposition ahead of future elections.
