Navy-Led Maritime Institute Launches Executive Course for Journalists to Deepen Blue Economy Reporting

‎In a move to bridge the knowledge gap in maritime reporting, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has unveiled an exclusive executive course designed specifically for media practitioners, with the aim of bolstering national engagement with the Blue Economy.

The programme, scheduled to hold later this July, will bring together leading maritime journalists and senior media executives for intensive training sessions on the strategic potentials of Nigeria’s coastal and marine assets.

‎IMION, the Nigerian Navy’s research and training arm, announced the initiative in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as a high-impact intervention to improve media-led policy advocacy, public awareness, and industry collaboration within the maritime sector.

‎“The media plays a vital role in shaping public discourse and influencing the sustainable growth of the Blue Economy,” the statement read. “This Executive Course is designed to equip media professionals with the tools to report more effectively on maritime issues and contribute meaningfully to national development efforts.”

The course will feature in-depth modules delivered by subject-matter experts with global experience, covering topics such as ocean governance, marine biodiversity, port economics, and climate-resilient shipping.

‎IMION emphasized that the training reflects a growing recognition of journalists as key stakeholders in Nigeria’s quest to harness its ocean-based resources for economic transformation.

‎Beyond capacity building, the course also aims to strengthen dialogue between the media and maritime industry players, fostering mutual understanding and cross-sector collaboration on policy, innovation, and sustainability.

‎“As Nigeria seeks to unlock the economic and environmental value of its vast marine domain, empowering the media with accurate insights and technical knowledge is essential to ensuring inclusive, informed, and responsible development,” the statement concluded.
