Globacom Trains Lagos Street Sweepers in Vocational, Digital Skills

In a significant boost for community empowerment, telecommunications giant, Globacom has graduated a cohort of Lagos street sweepers from its Glo Skillbridge training programme arming them with practical skills in digital design, fashion, and baking.

‎The initiative, fully sponsored by the Glo Foundation, marks a milestone in Globacom’s corporate social responsibility efforts, aimed at creating economic opportunities for underrepresented groups, particularly workers under the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

‎Held in Lagos, the graduation ceremony celebrated the completion of an intensive skills acquisition course tailored for sweepers who keep the city clean but often lack access to professional development.

Head of CSR at Globacom, Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, commended the participants for their dedication, describing the training as “a life-changing intervention.”

She noted that the programme wasn’t just about skills but about restoring dignity and expanding income possibilities for everyday workers.

‎“You now have tools to improve your lives and build alternative income streams,” she said. “We believe this is a sustainable way to give back to our host communities.”

‎LAWMA’s Executive Director of Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, who represented the agency’s Managing Director, also applauded Globacom’s commitment.

“This is a commendable initiative that opens new economic pathways for these workers,” he said.

‎Participants demonstrated a range of new skills, from baking to fashion design and digital media. In one moving moment, a trainee showcased how to design with Canva, while another gave a passionate presentation on artificial intelligence.

‎The programme also recognized outstanding participants in each category.

‎In the baking category, Omowunmi Sarah shared how the training has given her a long-awaited opportunity to earn beyond street sweeping.

‎“This has truly changed my life,” she said.

‎Damilola Olowolafe took top honours in the fashion category, while another inspiring story came from Udoh Blessing, who took her mother’s place in the digital track.

‎“If I don’t use what I’ve learnt, even God will be angry with me,” she declared emotionally.

‎The Glo Skillbridge programme reflects a broader vision to bridge social and economic gaps by equipping underserved populations with future-ready skills. With success stories emerging from this cohort, Globacom’s model of empowerment is being hailed as a template for impactful CSR in Nigeria.
