U.S. Warns Nigerians Against Visa Fraud, Overstay as Offenders to Face Lifetime Ban, Prosecution

The United States government has warned Nigerians that individuals involved in visa fraud or overstaying their visas will face severe penalties, including permanent bans from entering the U.S. and possible criminal prosecution. In a statement shared on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, the U.S. Embassy emphasized that visa fraud—such as submitting false documents, lying on applications, or engaging in deceitful sponsorship arrangements—will not be tolerated. The embassy warned that offenders could face lifetime ineligibility for U.S. visas and be prosecuted under U.S. law. “There is no such thing as an ‘honest mistake’ when it comes to visa fraud or overstays,” the U.S. Mission stated. “Consular officers and immigration officials have access to your full travel history, and any violation could result in a permanent visa denial, deportation, or legal action.” The U.S. also warned against the use of unauthorized agents, document forgers, or smugglers. According to the Mission, not only will visa applicants be penalized, but any sponsor or third party complicit in the fraud will also face serious consequences. This announcement comes amid a wider crackdown on immigration violations, following a recent policy change that now limits Nigerian non-immigrant visa holders to single-entry visas valid for only three months, down from the previous five-year multiple-entry visa. The U.S. government said the new measure aligns with global visa reciprocity standards and aims to curb abuse of the system. U.S. authorities reiterated that individuals who overstay their approved duration of stay, even by a few days, may face long-term consequences including travel bans, deportation, and ineligibility for future visas.
