Police Report Attempts to Hijack Retired Officers’ Protest

On Monday, the Nigeria Police Force announced that certain individuals attempted to commandeer the peaceful protest organized by retired police officers against inadequate welfare in various regions of the nation.

This information was shared in a post on the Nigeria Police Force’s X handle on Monday.

While the specific individuals were not named, the post indicated that there were efforts to incite the disgruntled retirees to forsake dialogue in favor of confrontation and chaos during the peaceful protest.

“Nevertheless, the peaceful demonstration faces jeopardy as individuals with hidden agendas have tried to seize control of the movement. These parties are discouraging the retirees from pursuing dialogue and are instead advocating for confrontation and chaos.”

“The Nigeria Police Force implores all genuine stakeholders among the retirees to maintain composure, uphold the law, and be open to the peaceful resolution process already underway.

The IGP is resolute in engaging with them constructively and addressing their rightful grievances with dignity and respect,” the statement partially read.

However, the police stated that Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is dedicated to engaging with the retired police officers.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory met with the protesters and informed them of arrangements for a meeting with the IGP.

“Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged his personal commitment to addressing the retired police officers currently protesting for enhanced retirement benefits.

“This pledge was communicated through the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, who met with the retirees and informed them that arrangements have been made for the IGP to meet with them at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja,” the statement continued.

Some retired police officers took to the streets of Abuja and Taraba State on Monday in a peaceful protest to highlight the substandard welfare conditions of both active and retired members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The protest in Abuja was spearheaded by the Convener of the Revolution Now Movement, Omoyele Sowore, who joined the retirees in demanding urgent action from the Federal Government.

The protesters voiced their dissatisfaction over what they described as years of neglect, non-payment of pensions, and the poor treatment of officers who have served the nation with dedication.
