Onoh Defends Tinubu’s Diplomatic Strategy, Dismisses ADC’s Criticism as Alarmist

Dr. Josef Onoh, former South-East spokesman of President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 campaign, has defended the President’s diplomatic and governance approach, describing recent criticisms by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as alarmist and politically motivated. Onoh, in a statement issued on Saturday, dismissed the ADC-led coalition’s attacks on Tinubu’s administration as noise from desperate politicians. He said the real challenge to Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 is not from the opposition, but from within the government itself—particularly among non-performing ministers who remain silent while benefiting from the administration. “The threat to the re-election bid of President Tinubu is not from any opposition or so-called mega coalition. The real threat is from some members within the system—ministers and appointees who are silent, non-performing, and only visible in name. These are the people endangering our chances, not the ADC or any of their associates,” Onoh stated. He praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as one of the few cabinet members who has been vocal in defending the President and visibly implementing projects. Onoh criticised others for failing to show public commitment to the government’s goals, warning that such silence and inaction could damage the administration’s prospects ahead of the next elections. Onoh also defended Tinubu’s international engagements and foreign policy direction, stating that the President’s diplomatic initiatives have strengthened Nigeria’s global image and regional influence, especially in areas of economic cooperation and security. His comments come in response to ADC’s recent accusations that Tinubu’s food security policies and other initiatives are political tools designed to counter the growing influence of the opposition. The ADC, alongside other opposition figures, had accused the President’s media aides of inciting fear by alleging a plot to destabilise the government. Onoh rejected these claims, calling them baseless and irresponsible. He said the administration remains focused on delivering on its promises and addressing national challenges, despite distractions from critics. Meanwhile, APC officials and presidential aides have also condemned the ADC coalition, describing it as a collection of disgruntled politicians with no clear ideology. Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said the opposition alliance was built on hatred for President Tinubu, not on policy alternatives or public interest. The Lagos State chapter of the APC also reacted to the ADC’s criticism, describing it as mischievous and a misrepresentation of facts. The party defended Tinubu’s record, pointing to ongoing reforms and efforts at national recovery. Onoh urged President Tinubu to review the performance of his ministers and appointees, saying many of them are disconnected from the political realities and failing to promote the government’s image. He warned that unless decisive action is taken, internal sabotage could weaken the administration’s strength more than any opposition coalition.
