Stay Away from NASS, Senate Reiterates Warning to Natasha

The Nigerian Senate has once again warned suspended Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to stay away from the National Assembly complex despite her insistence on resuming plenary.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had on Saturday declared her intention to return to the Red Chamber on Tuesday, July 22, citing a recent Federal High Court judgment by Justice Binta Nyako, which she claimed supported her recall.

However, in a swift reaction on Sunday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, refuted the senator’s claim, insisting that no valid court order compels the Senate to reinstate her.

Adaramodu clarified that the ruling in question merely gave an “advisory opinion,” suggesting that the Senate review its Standing Orders and reassess the suspension, which the court deemed possibly excessive.

“For the third time, the Senate reiterates that there is no subsisting court order mandating the Senate to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before the end of her suspension,” the Senate spokesperson said.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was earlier suspended over alleged misconduct and actions deemed to have brought disrepute to the upper legislative chamber.
