Sergius Ogun Emerges ADC Candidate for Edo Central Senatorial District By-Election

Former member of the House of Representatives, Barrister Sergius Ogun, has officially emerged as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the upcoming Edo Central Senatorial District by-election.
The primary election was held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and was supervised by the leadership of the ADC in Edo State, with delegates, party stakeholders, and supporters present to witness the process.
Ogun, who previously represented the Esan North-East and Esan South-East federal constituency in the National Assembly, secured the party’s nomination after what party officials described as a credible and transparent selection process.
The state chairman of the ADC, acting as the returning officer, declared Ogun the winner and duly signed the official result sheet confirming his candidacy.
In his acceptance speech, Sergius Ogun expressed appreciation to the party’s delegates and leadership for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to run an issue-based campaign that would focus on the welfare of the people of Edo Central and the need for stronger representation in the Senate. Ogun stated that his decision to return to public service was driven by the urgent need for quality legislative input and people-oriented governance.
The upcoming by-election was necessitated by the elevation of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who vacated the Edo Central senatorial seat after his swearing-in as Governor of Edo State in November 2024.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 16, 2025, for the conduct of the by-election across the five local government areas that make up the senatorial district: Esan Central, Esan North-East, Esan South-East, Esan West, and Igueben.
With Ogun’s emergence, the ADC is positioning itself as a serious contender in a district historically dominated by the two major parties—the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Political observers believe Ogun’s legal background, legislative track record, and established political network in the district could give him a competitive edge in the race.
Party insiders say preparations are already underway for a formal campaign launch, during which Ogun will outline his vision and policy priorities to the electorate.
The ADC leadership in Edo State has described his candidacy as a major step forward in the party’s broader strategy to break the dominance of the mainstream parties and offer a credible alternative to the people.
As the campaign season heats up and political parties begin to unveil their candidates and manifestoes, the by-election for Edo Central is expected to be closely watched, with voter turnout and party mobilization playing a critical role in determining the eventual outcome.
