UNIMAID Renaming: ASUU to Reveal Stance Soon

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Maiduguri has announced that it will soon disclose its position on the renaming of the institution after the late President Muhammadu Buhari. The union’s chairman, Dr. Abubakar MShelia, stated that the decision will be made public after the next congress meeting.
While the union’s stance remains unclear, the Student Union Government has expressed mixed views on the renaming. The SUG President, Yahaya Maigari, noted that a significant percentage of students are opposed to the change due to the university’s long-standing reputation.
However, he personally commended President Bola Tinubu for the decision, citing Buhari’s contributions to education in Nigeria.
The immediate past SUG President, Muhammad Bello, also praised the renaming, describing it as a tribute to the late President’s impact on the nation. As the university community awaits the ASUU’s official stance, the debate surrounding the renaming continues to generate diverse opinions.
