UNIMED Registrar, Adeniran Killed in Suspected Assassination, Confirms Ondo Police

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Mr. Ezekiel Imoleayo Adeniran, Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED). The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 17, 2025, at his residence in the Fanibi area of Akure, the state capital. According to police reports, Mr. Adeniran was attacked outside his home by two unknown men who emerged from nearby bushes while he was checking a noise on his rooftop. The assailants allegedly forced a yet-to-be-identified substance into his mouth. He was later found unconscious by his driver and rushed to the Police Clinic in Akure, where he was confirmed dead. Spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, described the incident as a suspected case of assassination. She said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation. She also confirmed that one suspect had been arrested and was undergoing interrogation at the anti-kidnapping unit. Mr. Adeniran was appointed as the third substantive Registrar of UNIMED on January 6, 2025. He was 41 years old at the time of his death. Sources at the university said he was active at work earlier in the week and showed no signs of distress prior to the attack. Reacting to the incident, the Head of Public Relations at UNIMED, Isaac Oluyi, described the late registrar as a dedicated professional and a major contributor to the university's growth. He said the institution had been thrown into mourning and that tributes had begun pouring in from staff, students, and colleagues across the state and beyond. The police have called on members of the public with useful information regarding the incident to assist with the investigation, assuring that any information provided would be treated confidentially. The academic community and residents of Ondo State have expressed shock and grief over the death, with calls mounting for a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
