APC Carpets ADC over Condemnation of Tinubu on Buhari’s Tribute

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fiercely criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its condemnation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tribute and the state burial accorded to former President Muhammadu Buhari, calling the opposition party’s comments “insensitive,” “unacceptable,” and “inhuman.”

In a statement released on Saturday by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused the ADC of politicising what it described as a solemn moment of national mourning. The APC said the ADC’s comments reflect the “party’s hypocrisy, moral bankruptcy, and desperation for relevance.”

“The party’s criticism of the dignified state burial accorded the late President is as spooky as it is unconscionable,” the APC stated. “Again, the ADC has showcased itself to be without any understanding of customary state practice, and lacking empathy and essential humanity.”

The backlash comes in response to a statement issued on Friday by Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, who described President Tinubu’s tribute to the late Buhari as a “deliberate publicity stunt” by an “unpopular administration.”

Abdullahi had questioned the sincerity of Tinubu’s remarks, accusing the President of using the funeral rites to score political points rather than genuinely honouring the late leader.

President Tinubu, during a Special Federal Executive Council session held in Buhari’s honour on Thursday, had described the former president as “a good, decent, and honourable man” whose life was marked by patriotism, integrity, and commitment to national service.

“Despite his flaws,” Tinubu said, “Buhari remained devoted to Nigeria and left an indelible mark in the nation’s history.”

However, the APC condemned the ADC’s reaction as “beyond the pale,” accusing the opposition party of seeking attention through “vile rhetoric” during a week of national mourning.

“What would the ADC have had President Tinubu do?” the APC asked. “Deny the late President Buhari the honour of a befitting state burial? Withhold empathy and support for the bereaved former First Family? As a party that can begrudge the dead, the ADC must surely disdain the living.”

The APC further described the ADC as a “dumping ground of Nigeria’s internally displaced politicians,” claiming the party “lacks the humanity required for serious political engagement.”

“It is unacceptable for the ADC to politicize a solemn moment of national grief,” the statement continued. “Its reference to heartfelt gestures and activities of the government in honour of the late President as ‘exploitation’ is not just false but malevolent.”

The ruling party warned Nigerians against what it called “the deceitful politics of the ADC,” urging citizens to disregard “baseless attacks” on President Tinubu’s administration.

“The late President Buhari lived a life of illustrious service—as a soldier, Head of State, and two-term democratically elected president. He was a father and human being, survived by a grieving family that deserves our support and empathy.

“President Bola Tinubu’s compassion and leadership in overseeing the state burial of his predecessor is a testament to his humanity and patriotism.”

The statement concluded with a stern warning: “Nigerians must remain wary of the ADC and its band of political marauders prowling for power with nothing to offer Nigerians except peddling falsehood and vilifying a President who is hard at work for the transformation and progress of our nation.”
