Another Osun Senator Resigns from PDP Amid Growing Internal Crisis

The crisis rocking the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened as Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi, representing Osun Central Senatorial District, officially resigned from the party. His decision comes shortly after Senator Francis Fadahunsi of Osun East also announced his departure, raising concerns about the future of the PDP in the state. Senator Fadeyi, in a resignation letter addressed to his ward leadership, cited irreconcilable differences, protracted internal conflicts, and unresolved court cases as the reasons behind his exit. He stated that the party had become increasingly divided and unable to manage its internal challenges. “After wide consultations with my family, political associates, and supporters, I have resolved to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party. The persistent internal crisis and conflicting interests have made it impossible to continue with the party,” Fadeyi wrote. His resignation leaves only one PDP senator from Osun State, significantly weakening the party's representation in the National Assembly and prompting fears of mass defection among party members in the state. Senator Francis Fadahunsi had earlier resigned from the PDP in a letter addressed to his Ward 4 Chairman in Obokun Local Government Area. In his letter, he cited similar grievances, including endless legal battles and an unhealthy political atmosphere within the party. The back-to-back resignations come amid speculations that both senators may be moving towards the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, had earlier publicly invited the three PDP senators from Osun to join the APC after they endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. Governor Ademola Adeleke, the PDP leader in Osun, has repeatedly denied rumours that he plans to defect to the APC. However, political analysts say the recent resignations have cast a shadow on the party’s unity and Adeleke’s control over its structure. The PDP has yet to issue an official response to Fadeyi’s resignation, though party insiders say the leadership is alarmed by the growing discontent within its ranks. With two of its three senators gone, the party now faces an uphill task in retaining influence and preparing for future elections in the state.
