Lecturer from Kogi State University Dies in Controversial Circumstances with 200 Level Female Student

A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly Kogi State University), Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died in controversial circumstances while reportedly in the company of a 200-level female student.

The incident, which occurred inside a hotel in Anyigba, has sparked outrage, speculation, and debate both online and within academic circles. Dr. Ibikunle, a faculty member in the Department of Education, allegedly slumped and died shortly after engaging in sexual activity with the unnamed student from the Department of Social Studies Education.

According to preliminary reports, the lecturer checked into the hotel three days prior to his death, reportedly appearing energetic and consuming multiple bottles of energy drinks before the fatal encounter. Sources say he collapsed during the act and could not be revived by hotel staff, who were alerted by the student.

The Kogi State Police Command has since taken over the investigation. The student, who remains unnamed for legal reasons, is currently in police custody and has reportedly denied any wrongdoing. She claims she neither harmed nor poisoned Dr. Ibikunle.

“We are treating the case as suspicious until a full autopsy and toxicology report are completed,” a senior police official stated. “While initial indicators point toward cardiac arrest possibly triggered by overconsumption of stimulants and physical exertion, we are exploring all angles, including the possibility of foul play.”

Dr. Ibikunle’s sudden demise has drawn widespread reaction on social media, particularly from students of the university. Many took to platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Facebook to express shock, disbelief, and in some cases, criticism over the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

University authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but the administration are monitoring the situation closely. The case has also reignited national conversations around the ethics of student-lecturer relationships, power dynamics in Nigerian tertiary institutions, and the risks associated with energy drink abuse.

The body of Dr. Ibikunle has been deposited at the university teaching hospital morgue, where an autopsy is scheduled. Meanwhile, police continue to interrogate hotel staff, review CCTV footage, and analyze forensic evidence from the scene.

As investigations continue, many are calling for a thorough and transparent process to uncover the truth behind a tragedy that has not only shocked a university community but also cast a shadow over academic professionalism and student safety.
