UNN Tops 2025 Federal University Budget Allocation List with ₦44.4 Billion ‎

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has emerged as the highest-funded federal university in Nigeria for the 2025 fiscal year, receiving a budgetary allocation of ₦44.4 billion, according to data from the Budget Office of the Federation and compiled by StatiSense.

‎UNN leads a list of top 12 federal universities with the largest budgetary allocations for 2025, underscoring the institution’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

‎Following UNN on the list is Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, with an allocation of ₦39.8 billion, and the University of Calabar (UNICAL) with ₦39.7 billion. Other universities in the top tier include:

‎University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) – ₦34.2 billion

‎Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) – ₦31.8 billion

‎University of Benin (UNIBEN) – ₦30.3 billion

‎Bayero University, Kano (BUK) – ₦29.3 billion

‎University of Ibadan (UI) – ₦27.8 billion

‎University of Uyo (UNIUYO) – ₦26.9 billion

‎University of Lagos (UNILAG) – ₦24.6 billion

‎University of Jos (UNIJOS) – ₦24.2 billion

‎Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) – ₦23.5 billion


‎A regional analysis shows a relatively balanced distribution across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones:

‎North Central (NC), North East (NE), North West (NW), South East (SE), South South (SS), South West (SW)

‎Experts say the budget allocations reflect both student population and institutional capacity, while also highlighting the government’s ongoing effort to strengthen the country’s federal university system.

‎The figures are part of the approved 2025 budget as published by the Budget Office of the Federation.
