Prominent Nigerians Converge on Daura for Buhari’s 3rd-Day Prayer

Prominent Nigerian leaders have converged on Daura, Katsina State, for the Third Day prayer in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, in line with Islamic funeral traditions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led the delegation of high-profile dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Katsina State Governor Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda, Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, and several federal ministers.

The Third Day prayer, a key rite in Islamic burial customs, is traditionally held to pray for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and to bring closure to the immediate mourning period.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had paid tribute to his predecessor during the burial on Tuesday, had directed Vice President Shettima to personally oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s remains from London, where he passed away, and to supervise the final rites in Daura.

Shettima’s continued presence in the late president’s hometown underscores the significance the current administration attaches to honouring Buhari’s legacy.

Following the prayer session, the Vice President and accompanying ministers are expected to return to Abuja to participate in a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened in memory of the former President.

Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former military head of state and two-term civilian president, died in London earlier this week and was laid to rest in Daura on Tuesday, July 15, in accordance with Islamic traditions.
