UNICAL Vice Chancellor Addresses Controversy Over Medical Students’ Transfer

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Professor Florence Obi, has revealed that the university will invoke internal mechanisms to address the controversy surrounding the transfer of medical students from another institution.
According to Professor Florence Obi, the affected students exceeded the quota by a significant margin, with 128 students admitted against an approved quota of 10. The Vice Chancellor expressed disappointment that the issue was not addressed earlier, despite the university’s council being aware of the situation since 2022.
Professor Florence Obi took responsibility for the situation, stating that as the head of the institution, she cannot deny her role in the matter. She assured that queries would be issued to relevant officials and consequences would be meted out accordingly.
The Vice Chancellor also explored possible solutions for the affected students, particularly those in their final year, suggesting that some might be accommodated in other programs within the University of Calabar or sister institutions.
