Iran’s Araghchi Meets Yi in Cooperation Meeting over War with Israel

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting, discussing recent tensions with Israel and strengthening bilateral relations.

Araghchi briefed Wang on the ceasefire developments, and both ministers explored opportunities to deepen their countries’ partnership.

Iran is seeking to bolster its military ties with China, particularly in the wake of its recent conflict with Israel. Potential areas of cooperation include the purchase of Chinese fighter jets to modernize Iran’s aging air force. China has pledged to support Iran in defending its sovereignty and resisting external pressures, with Wang Yi emphasizing Beijing’s commitment to helping Iran navigate complex geopolitical dynamics.

The two nations have a longstanding strategic partnership, with China being a crucial partner for Iran amid international sanctions. Their collaboration extends to defense technology, joint military exercises, and intelligence sharing. The strengthening military ties between Iran and China have significant implications for regional security, potentially leading to increased military spending and a shift in regional power dynamics.

While analysts view a comprehensive military partnership between Iran and China as unlikely, both nations are expected to continue exploring areas of cooperation. Their partnership is driven by shared interests in counterbalancing Western influence and enhancing regional stability.
