Don’t Rely on Government Patronage Alone, Otti Counsels Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to avoid dependence on government patronage and instead embrace self-sustenance through community-driven initiatives. The governor made the remark during the inauguration of the new executive of the Abia State chapter of the organization in Umuahia. Addressing members of the socio-cultural group, Otti stressed the need for financial independence, saying that true relevance and influence can only be maintained when the organization is not financially tied to political authorities. He encouraged Ohanaeze to mobilize resources from the larger Igbo community and build structures that reflect the collective strength and unity of the people. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo must move away from dependency on government subventions. You need to generate your own resources through the strength of your people. That is how to build a truly independent and effective organization,” the governor stated. He pointed to the recent success of the Abia State Security Trust Fund, which raised over ₦4.1 billion from individuals and corporate donors. According to him, this achievement proved that Igbos are willing to support collective causes when there is transparency, accountability, and a clear vision. Otti also urged the group to lead efforts in reviving core Igbo values such as honesty, hard work, and respect for elders, which he said are gradually being lost. He lamented the rising social vices among the youth and charged Ohanaeze to take active steps in promoting moral and cultural education. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to cultural preservation by noting that Igbo has been made a compulsory subject in all schools in the state, with the aim of fostering pride and identity among the younger generation. Commending the newly inaugurated leadership of the organization, the governor called on them to lead with integrity and unity of purpose, stressing that they must prioritize the collective interest of the Igbo people. The event attracted dignitaries, including traditional rulers, political figures, and representatives from various Igbo communities.
