Oyo Strict on Traffic Violators, Prosecutes 6,000 Offenders in Less Than a Year

In a strong signal of its resolve to enforce compliance with state laws, the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has prosecuted over 6,000 traffic violators and 3,000 environmental offenders between September 2024 and July 2025.
Chairperson of the agency, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retired), revealed this during an inter-ministerial media briefing held Monday in Ibadan.
The event was part of the Oyo State Government’s ongoing effort to showcase its administrative progress under Governor Seyi Makinde.
Justice Aderemi said the enforcement drive is being carried out through two active tribunals set up by the agency to swiftly handle minor offences such as traffic and environmental violations.
“Our mandate covers misdemeanor offences only we do not handle capital crimes like murder,” she clarified.
According to her, the OYRLEA was established in 2024 to strengthen enforcement around environmental sanitation, traffic discipline, and open grazing regulations in the state.
Highlighting the structure of justice delivery under the agency, Aderemi noted that offenders are provided legal representation and may apply for bail depending on the gravity of the charge.
“The tribunals are strategically located to ensure swift prosecution, and legal counsel is provided to defend suspects. Offences attract fines and sometimes custodial sentences,” she said.
She commended the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders including the Amotekun Corps, Nigeria Police, the military, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Legal Aid Council which she said have played a critical role in the agency’s success.
Justice Aderemi added that the agency’s interventions have significantly reduced open grazing violations and farmer-herder conflicts in several parts of the state.
“All our operations are focused on promoting law-abiding behaviour among residents and ensuring a safe, peaceful society for all,” she said.
