Katsina United Suspends Football Activities in Honour of Buhari

Katsina United Football Club has announced the immediate suspension of all football-related activities following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2025. The club, in an official statement released on Monday, said the decision was taken as a mark of honour and mourning for the late President, who hailed from Daura in Katsina State. According to the statement, all training sessions, matches, and administrative operations have been put on hold until further notice. “Following the unfortunate demise of our father and former President, Muhammadu Buhari, the management, players, technical crew, and backroom staff of Katsina United Football Club have resolved to suspend all club activities until further notice,” the statement read. The club extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the government of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, urging supporters to keep the former President in their prayers. Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and as elected President from 2015 to 2023, was widely recognised for his dedication to youth development and national unity. His support for sports, particularly football, earned him praise from many quarters within the sports community. CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, also paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a man who was passionate about football and who supported the growth of the game in Nigeria. The National Sports Commission similarly honoured him, stating that his legacy in sports development will remain impactful for years to come. Katsina United said it will announce the resumption of activities after the official mourning period. The decision by the club reflects the deep respect and emotional connection shared between the people of Katsina and the late President, whose legacy continues to shape the state and the nation.
