General Christopher Musa Pays Tribute to Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has paid a solemn and heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Armed Forces, General Musa described Buhari as an “incorruptible leader,” “a vanguard of prudence,” and a national figure whose life was marked by unwavering discipline, dedication to service, and commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria.
In his statement, General Musa reflected on Buhari’s enduring legacy, highlighting his intolerance for indiscipline and his unshakable reputation for integrity and modesty, both as a military leader and as a civilian president. Musa said Buhari’s leadership remained an inspiring standard for the country’s armed forces, noting that his firm approach to governance and public accountability helped shape Nigeria’s institutional values.
He recalled the former president’s humility and patriotism, stating that Buhari embodied the qualities of a true statesman whose love for the nation was evident in every phase of his public life.
The Defence Chief extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Nigeria, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the nation to remain united in honouring the life and times of the late leader.
He offered prayers for Buhari’s soul and called for strength for the country in this moment of collective mourning.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned to lead as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died after a prolonged illness.
His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history. Following his passing, President Tinubu declared a seven-day period of national mourning and ordered all flags across the country to be flown at half-mast.
The late president’s body arrived in Nigeria on July 15, and a state burial was held the same day in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The ceremony drew dignitaries from across the continent, including several African heads of state and former Nigerian leaders. The federal government also constituted an interministerial committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to oversee the funeral arrangements.
