Delta Launches Major Flood Control Operation in Asaba

In a proactive move to combat seasonal flooding and improve sanitation, the Delta Capital Territory Development Agency has launched a large-scale flood control campaign across Asaba, the state capital.

‎Speaking at the flag-off event on Monday, Director-General of the agency, Chief Patrick Ukah, said the exercise is part of a broader strategy to build a cleaner, flood-resilient, and sustainable environment for residents.

‎“This operation is a critical component of the government’s flood management and urban sanitation plan,” Ukah said, adding that the initiative involves desilting of drains, clearing overgrown vegetation, and evacuating waste and debris to government-approved dump sites.

‎He noted that proper drainage maintenance is key to protecting lives, infrastructure, and property, especially during the rainy season.

‎“By keeping our stormwater channels clear, we not only reduce flood risks but also enhance environmental health and public safety,” he stated.

‎Ukah urged residents to support the campaign by maintaining good environmental hygiene and stopping indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains.

‎Coordinating the operation is Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at the agency, who is overseeing field teams to ensure the timely and effective execution of the project.

‎“We are deploying teams across strategic locations in Asaba for intensive desilting and debris evacuation,” Nwosu said. “It’s a well-coordinated effort with strong support from community members.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the operation is being carried out in collaboration with environmental health officers, sanitation personnel, waste management contractors, and volunteers.

‎The flood mitigation drive is expected to reduce the impact of flash floods in vulnerable areas and contribute to improved public health outcomes across the capital territory.
