A tragic wave of violence unfolded in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday, when a gunman opened fire inside the Richmond Road Baptist Church, killing two women and injuring several others before being fatally shot by law enforcement officers.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased victims include a 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman, both of whom were caught in the crossfire during what police described as a rapidly escalating series of violent events involving the same suspect.
According to the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the ordeal began at approximately 11:36 a.m. on July 13, when a state trooper was shot during an encounter with the suspect in Fayette County.
The gunman subsequently fled the initial scene and sought refuge inside the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where congregants were gathered.
The incident quickly turned into an active shooter situation, drawing a heavy response from both KSP and the Lexington Police Department (LPD).
Emergency medical teams were also dispatched to the church as reports of multiple casualties emerged.
“The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church,” Kentucky State Police said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
“The suspect is deceased. At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention and there are multiple victims at the church. EMS is on scene.”
Governor Andy Beshear also addressed the tragedy in a statement on X, describing the events as “senseless acts of violence” and calling for prayers for the victims and injured.
He confirmed that those wounded including the trooper are currently receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.
“Kentucky, we are aware of a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect,” Governor Beshear wrote. “Please pray for everyone affected, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police.”
Law enforcement officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect or a possible motive, but investigations are ongoing.
The Kentucky State Police said more updates will be provided as additional details become available.
