Tinubu Convenes Emergency FEC Meeting to Honour Late Buhari
President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in a solemn tribute personally signed by the President shortly after the news of Buhari’s passing was confirmed.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu declared.
He added that the FEC meeting would be dedicated entirely to honouring the legacy of the late statesman, who served Nigeria as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
President Tinubu, visibly moved in his statement, described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” saying his death filled him with “profound sorrow and a heavy heart.”
He praised the late president’s unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity, discipline, and integrity. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength and profound integrity,” the President said.
Highlighting Buhari’s legacy, Tinubu noted that the late leader “confronted corruption head-on, placed the country above personal interest, and instilled discipline in public service.”
The President also extended his condolences to the late President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, their children, and the entire Buhari family, while acknowledging the traditional leadership and people of Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State.
Buhari is expected to be accorded full state honours, with arrangements underway for his body to be flown back to Nigeria for burial.
