NLC Mourns Buhari, Says He Protected Workers and Ordinary People

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who consistently protected the rights and welfare of workers and the ordinary Nigerian. In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero said Buhari, during his tenure as a civilian president, showed a remarkable commitment to the dignity and well-being of workers. He noted that throughout Buhari’s eight years in office, no worker was laid off, even during difficult periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession. “President Muhammadu Buhari corrected the mistakes of his military past. He became a firm defender of workers and resisted policies that would have hurt the masses. He ensured that workers were paid and that no one was left behind,” Ajaero said. The NLC praised Buhari’s role in supporting state governments through financial interventions and bailout packages that helped clear salary and pension backlogs. Ajaero also commended Buhari for rejecting pressures to privatize national oil refineries and devalue the naira, moves the union believes would have worsened the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians. According to the labour leader, Buhari’s actions during his presidency earned him the trust and respect of organised labour, despite past tensions during his military regime in the 1980s. The NLC extended its condolences to the late president’s family, especially his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and prayed for strength and comfort for them during this time of grief. Former President Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82 after a brief illness. His death has triggered a wave of tributes across the nation from political figures, religious leaders, and civil society groups. President Bola Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning and directed all flags to be flown at half-mast nationwide. He also dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the United Kingdom to coordinate the return of Buhari’s remains. A state burial is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, in Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours. A state funeral committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been inaugurated to oversee the ceremonies. Members of the committee include several key ministers and public officials. As the nation prepares to bid farewell, the NLC called on Nigerians to honour Buhari’s legacy by upholding the values of justice, equity, and service to the people, especially the working class.
