Katsina Declares Monday Work-Free to Honour Late President Buhari

The Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the memory of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died last week in London at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, the government said the work-free day will enable citizens across the state to pay tribute to one of Nigeria’s most prominent sons, who hailed from Daura in Katsina State.

“The Katsina State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, has approved Monday, July 14, 2025, as a work-free day across the state in honour of our father, leader, and elder statesman, President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.

Governor Radda, in a separate message of condolence, described Buhari as “an embodiment of discipline, patriotism, and selfless service to the nation.” He noted that the late president’s legacy, especially in the areas of anti-corruption, national security, and public integrity, would remain a guiding light for future leaders.

The governor also called on all residents to use the day not only to mourn but to reflect on the ideals and principles for which Buhari stood.

“This day is not just about grief; it is about honouring a man whose entire life was devoted to the progress of Nigeria,” Radda said.

Special prayers and memorial activities have been scheduled to take place in key locations across the state, including Katsina city and Daura, the late president’s hometown. Traditional rulers, religious leaders, community organizations, and government officials are expected to participate in these tributes.

President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

His death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from across the country and around the world, with many leaders praising his contributions to Nigeria’s development and his unwavering commitment to public service.

Buhari is expected to be buried in Daura with full state honours in accordance with Islamic rites.
