Aproko Doctor Raises the Alarm Over Health Effects of Poorly Processed Garri

Nigerian doctor and social media influencer Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with consuming poorly processed garri, a staple food made from cassava.
According to Egemba, improperly processed garri can contain high levels of hydrogen cyanide, a toxic substance that can cause harm to the body, including the eyes.
The cyanogenic glycosides present in cassava, specifically linamarin and lotaustralin, can convert into hydrogen cyanide during processing. If consumed in large quantities, this toxic substance can affect certain tissues in the body, including the optic nerve and retina, potentially leading to vision problems.
A study referenced by Egemba suggests that frequent garri consumption may be linked to reduced visual acuity.
However, Egemba emphasizes that properly processed garri is safe for consumption. During proper processing, the hydrogen cyanide levels are reduced to safe amounts through fermenting, drying, and other methods.
To ensure safe consumption, Egemba advises consumers to look out for properly dried, crispy, and sour garri, as moisture may indicate inadequate fermentation and drying.
To minimize risks, Egemba recommends purchasing sealed, NAFDAC-approved garri from reputable sources. He stresses the importance of verifying the source and processing methods, asking, “Who processed it? Was it processed properly?” Egemba also calls on NAFDAC to intensify checks on garri sold in local markets to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Other health experts, including ophthalmologists, have weighed in on the issue. Dr. Bolanle Balogun confirms that properly processed garri is safe for consumption and doesn’t cause blindness.
However, she notes that improperly processed garri containing cyanide can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.
In conclusion, while garri can be a nutritious part of a balanced diet, proper processing and handling are crucial to minimizing potential health risks. By choosing reputable sources and following safe consumption practices, individuals can enjoy garri while protecting their health.
