PDP Breaks Tradition, Wins Councillorrship Seat in Yaba Council

In a stunning upset, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has broken the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) long-standing dominance in Lagos State by winning the councillorship seat in Ward D of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
The PDP candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, a former APC member, defeated his former party’s candidate in a hotly contested race that political observers are calling a symbolic shift in the state’s deeply entrenched political landscape.
Dosunmu’s victory is especially significant as it represents the only councillorship seat won by the PDP out of the 376 seats contested across Lagos State’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 LCDAs.
The election was largely seen as a test of the APC’s grassroots hold on the state, which it has governed without interruption since the return of democracy in 1999.
The election in Ward D was not without tension. On Saturday, minor skirmishes were reported in the Yaba axis, as supporters of both parties clashed at several polling units. However, officers of the Lagos State Police Command responded swiftly, dispersing the crowds and restoring calm to allow the voting process to continue.
Speaking shortly after his victory was announced, Dosunmu described the win as a “vote of confidence in change” and thanked voters for placing their trust in him despite the odds.
“This is not just my victory; it’s a win for everyone who believes that democracy should work at all levels,” he said. “We are sending a message that no party is invincible when the people are determined.”
PDP leaders in the state hailed the victory as a breakthrough, describing it as a foundation for future expansion in Lagos politics, especially at the grassroots level.
Despite the largely peaceful conduct of the elections across the state, the isolated clashes in Yaba have prompted calls for improved security planning in future polls.
