My Food Serving Gesture, Act of Humility, Not Campaign Strategy, Explains Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has defended his recent act of serving food at a charity event in Imo State, saying it was an expression of humility and compassion, not a political campaign strategy. The former Anambra State governor came under criticism after a video surfaced online showing him personally serving food to attendees at the "Jubilee of Hope" outreach event in Owerri. While the footage received praise from many Nigerians, some critics accused Obi of using the gesture as a staged performance ahead of the 2027 elections. Reacting on Sunday through his verified X handle, Obi explained that the event was a private initiative aimed at supporting the poor and vulnerable. He clarified that the presence of cameras was not arranged by him, and the video in circulation was not released by his team. “In the past few days, I have been inundated with messages of commendation and criticism following the viral video of me serving food to the less privileged at a charitable event,” Obi stated. “It is pertinent to clarify that this gesture was neither a campaign strategy nor a publicity stunt.” Obi said he served food to several individuals at their request and saw no reason to refuse. He noted that acts of humility and service have always been part of his lifestyle, even before entering politics. “At the event, several elderly and underprivileged individuals requested that I serve them food personally. I saw no reason to decline, as I consider humility, compassion, and service key components of leadership,” he said. The Labour Party leader further stated that he lives a modest life, performs domestic chores by himself, and serves guests personally in his home. He called on leaders and members of the elite to adopt humility and show genuine concern for the needs of the people. Obi also mentioned that other dignitaries at the event, including Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and Dr. ABC Orjiako, also participated in the food-serving process, describing it as a collective act of service. He urged Nigerians not to view leadership through the lens of media spectacle but through everyday actions that make a positive impact on people’s lives. The Jubilee of Hope event was organised to support vulnerable groups across the South-East, including widows, orphans, the elderly, and those facing economic hardship.
