Draft Constitution that Will Enthrone Hope, Justice, Equity,.Namadi Charges Citizens

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, on Saturday, implored lawmakers and fellow citizens to craft a constitution that will illuminate hope, justice, and equity for future generations.

During the zonal public hearing on the 1999 Constitution review in Kaduna State, he emphasized that the ongoing constitutional amendments offer Nigerians a chance to etch their names in the annals of progress, justice, and national unity.

Represented by the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Haruna Dutse, Governor Namadi lauded the zonal hearing as a stellar example of democratic participation, embodying the shared determination to fortify the pillars of good governance and nation-building in Nigeria.

He remarked that a nation’s constitution transcends a mere legal document, asserting: “It is the essence of the country. It encapsulates our collective aspirations, delineates our national identity, and establishes the framework for justice, equity, and peace. Therefore, a constitution must remain a dynamic document, attuned to the evolving realities, aspirations, and legitimate expectations of its people.”

“This zonal public hearing is indeed a historic occasion, affording Nigerians the opportunity to directly influence the formation of the supreme law of the land. It highlights the fundamental truth that sovereignty resides with the people, and no constitution can endure without their consent and confidence.

“Citizen engagement is not merely a democratic ideal; it is the cornerstone of legitimate governance. Only by heeding our people can we genuinely comprehend their hopes, anxieties, and vision for the future. The perspectives of our traditional rulers, civil society groups, professional bodies, youth and women’s organizations, persons with disabilities, and ordinary citizens must be heard, respected, and reflected in this constitutional review’s outcome.

“I therefore urge all citizens present to participate actively and speak freely, knowing their contributions are vital to realizing the Nigeria we all aspire to — a nation governed by justice, fairness, and inclusiveness.

“Furthermore, I wish to underscore that our collective duty extends beyond these hearings. When the proposed amendments reach the state houses of assembly for ratification, I implore my fellow governors, esteemed speakers, and members of both national and state assemblies to ensure that the voices of our citizens continue to guide their decisions.

“Let us remember that as leaders, we are mere custodians of trust. We are privileged to hold these positions today, but tomorrow we shall be accountable — both before history and, ultimately, before the Almighty. It is thus incumbent upon us to act with courage, integrity, and fidelity to truth. We must do what is right for our people, even when it is arduous, for leadership is a sacred responsibility.

“This constitutional review is an opportunity for us to inscribe our names in the chronicles of progress, justice, and national unity. Let us seize this moment with conviction, knowing that the decisions we make today will shape the destiny of millions, not only in our time but for generations to come.”

Emphasizing that the journey to forging a stronger, more united, and prosperous Nigeria requires courage, wisdom, and sacrifice, he urged all citizens to approach the process with open minds, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.
