Buhari to Be Buried in Nigeria as Tinubu Sends Shettima to Escort Body from UK
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London following a prolonged illness, the Nigerian presidency confirmed on Saturday evening. He was 82.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally announced the death of his predecessor and immediate past leader of Nigeria, stating that Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time at a London hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
In line with Islamic burial rites, Buhari’s body will be flown back to Nigeria for immediate interment. President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom without delay to accompany the late president’s remains back to the country.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in an official statement, noted that all necessary arrangements have been initiated to ensure a dignified return and burial of the former leader.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was widely known for his austere lifestyle, anti-corruption stance, and a military background that shaped much of his political career.
Further details about the funeral proceedings and official mourning protocols are expected to be announced shortly.
