Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies at 91 After 64 Years on the Throne

Nigeria has lost another towering figure from its storied past, as Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, passed away on Sunday at the age of 91.

‎The revered monarch’s death comes just hours after the nation was plunged into mourning following the death of his close friend and former president, Muhammadu Buhari marking a profound moment of national reflection and generational transition.

‎Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, reigned for more than six decades, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history. His 64-year reign spanned both colonial twilight and post-independence evolution, during which he became not just a cultural symbol, but also a respected voice in national conversations.

‎Regarded as a monarch of intellect, influence, and quiet resilience, Adetona’s passing is expected to trigger widespread mourning across Yorubaland and beyond.

‎Details regarding funeral rites and official statements from the Ijebu traditional council and Ogun State government are expected in the coming hours.
