House Committee Clears NELMCO of Corruption

The House of Representatives Sub-Committee on the Protection of Critical National Assets has cleared the Nigerian Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO) of corruption allegations made by the Association for Public Policy Analysis (APPA). APPA had accused NELMCO of fund misappropriation and shady operations.

The sub-committee, led by Chairman Dabo Ismail, launched a comprehensive investigation and found that NELMCO’s existence is backed by the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023. The law mandates NELMCO to manage assets and liabilities of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and its successor companies.

Regarding the allegation of N94 million spent on a five-day retreat in Lagos, NELMCO’s Managing Director, Mojoyinoluwa Dekalu-Thomas, provided evidence of the expenditure, including costs for flights, logistics, food, and accommodation for 25 participants. The committee deemed the expenditure justifiable, considering the dignitaries in attendance.

The committee also dismissed the claim of NELMCO purchasing an office in the North, stating that no evidence supported this allegation. The chairman urged the petitioner to present any further evidence, assuring that the committee would investigate and do justice to the petition in the interest of Nigerians.
