Adamu Waziri Denies Plot to Topple Tinubu’s Government, Insists on Democratic Change

Former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri, has denied allegations of a plot to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through undemocratic means, insisting that any political challenge to the current administration will be carried out strictly through constitutional and democratic processes. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Waziri described the claims as “cheap blackmail” aimed at discrediting legitimate political opposition. He stated that the opposition remains committed to respecting the rule of law and the electoral process. “If I have the democratic means—but I don’t have the democratic means—which means I have to wait for two years to do so… like Bola, we are not toppling this government,” he said. “We are going to democratically remove this government. It is cheap blackmail to say people are planning to oust this government.” Waziri emphasized that criticism of government performance should not be equated with treason, adding that peaceful and legal opposition is a vital part of democracy. “No! We are challenging this government, you know, on the democratic process and to remove it. If I can do that—if there is a way that constitutionality and democracy allows us to remove this government—we will pursue it,” he added. The remarks come amidst growing political discourse around the performance of the Tinubu administration, with some opposition leaders expressing dissatisfaction over rising economic challenges, insecurity, and alleged governance failures. Waziri’s comments underscore a wider call for adherence to democratic norms and processes, and a rejection of any form of unconstitutional power change.
