Omokri Weighs in, Insists Tinubu Made Buhari President

Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has reignited a political debate by asserting that President Bola Tinubu played a pivotal role in Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 presidential victory.

Omokri dismissed claims by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, that Buhari didn’t need Tinubu’s support to become president.

According to Omokri, Buhari’s captive vote base of around 12 million, which he has maintained since 2003, wasn’t enough to secure his presidential wins in 2003, 2007, and 2011.

Omokri argues that Buhari’s eventual win was due to votes from other geopolitical zones, particularly the South, which complemented his existing voter base.

Omokri’s comments suggest that Nigeria’s political structure, established during Obasanjo’s military era, is designed to prevent any single region or ethnic group from dominating the presidency.

Therefore, a candidate needs votes from multiple regions to win. Without Tinubu’s influence, Omokri believes Goodluck Jonathan would have won the 2015 presidential election, and Buhari would have remained a minor player in Nigerian politics.

Omokri also accused Mustapha of attempting to create tension between Buhari and Tinubu, describing his claims as “silly”. The comments highlight the ongoing debate about the dynamics of Nigerian politics and the role of influential figures in shaping the country’s leadership.
