Sowore Mobilises Retired, Serving Police Officers to Protest Against Poor Pay

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called on serving and retired police officers to join a protest against low salaries in the Nigeria Police Force.
The protest, scheduled for July 21, 2025, aims to demand better pay for police officers, with Sowore advocating for a minimum monthly salary of ₦300,000 to ₦500,000.
Currently, police constables earn a monthly salary of around ₦43,923, which is considered inadequate by many. Sowore believes this low pay contributes to corruption and other issues within the force.
He urges officers to stand up for their rights and demand justice, framing the protest as a chance to “break free from slavery”.
The protest, dubbed “Pay Police As They Deserve,” seeks to address the long-standing issue of inadequate compensation for police officers. Many Nigerians have campaigned against the low incomes earned by policemen, citing it as a major factor in the force’s challenges.
Sowore’s activism extends beyond police welfare, as he has also spoken out against social, political, and economic conditions in Nigeria. As the founder of Sahara Reporters, he has been a vocal critic of government practices and corruption.
