FG Commences Reconstruction of Eastern Railway Corridor

The Federal Government has officially begun the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Eastern railway corridor, a key transport route spanning several states in the South-East and parts of the North-East.

This was confirmed by Victor Adamu, the Railway District Manager for the Eastern District in Enugu, during a national infrastructure survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Adamu revealed that construction work is already underway on the narrow-gauge rail line linking Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Aba in Abia State. The line is a critical segment of the larger Eastern corridor stretching from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, Borno State.

“The Eastern District covers Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, and part of Egbede in Benue State, which serves as our boundary with the North Central district. It spans about 110 kilometers,” he explained.

Adamu noted that the official handover of the project segment to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) occurred on November 28, 2024, marking a significant milestone in reviving the long-neglected corridor.

He also disclosed that train operations are active between Port Harcourt and Aba, running five days a week, indicating early signs of progress in the corridor’s rehabilitation.

The project is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernize and revitalize Nigeria’s rail transport system, especially in regions previously underserved by infrastructure investments.
