FCT Polls Will Prove Wike Doesn’t Control Abuja, Says Sen. Kingibe
Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has declared that the upcoming area council elections in Abuja will serve as a clear referendum on the leadership and influence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, Kingibe stated that the polls would reveal the true sentiments of FCT residents toward Wike’s performance since assuming office.
According to her, contrary to the perception that the former Rivers State governor wields unchecked control over the capital, the elections will demonstrate the autonomy and political awareness of the people.
“The forthcoming area council elections will show clearly that the people of the FCT know who is truly working for their interests. It will also prove that the FCT is not under the political control of any one individual, including the minister,” Kingibe said.
She emphasized that many residents remain dissatisfied with Wike’s approach to governance, particularly his alleged disregard for elected representatives and community stakeholders.
“It is not enough to build roads. Leadership in the FCT also requires listening to the voices of the people, engaging communities, and respecting the democratic process,” she added.
The senator noted that the outcome of the elections would be a strong indicator of how Abuja residents feel about Wike’s policies and leadership style. She urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a credible and transparent process that allows the will of the people to prevail.
The area council elections, which serve as the grassroots tier of governance in the FCT, are expected to take place later this year and have already generated political tension among key stakeholders.
