Southern ADC Leaders Mull Supporting Tinubu for 2027

Southern leaders in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are reportedly considering backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 if the party zones its presidential ticket to the North.

However, recent developments suggest a different trajectory for the party.

The ADC has been adopted as the primary coalition platform by prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. These leaders aim to challenge President Tinubu’s re-election bid under the ADC umbrella.

Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have been in talks with other key figures, such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to strengthen the party’s chances. The coalition is working to overhaul the ADC, with plans to announce changes to its National Leadership and Board of Trustees soon.

The decision on whether to zone the presidential ticket to a particular region or group remains a contentious issue within the party. Some members believe in the zoning principle, where power rotates among Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. Others argue that this approach might limit the party’s appeal and create internal conflicts.

Key figures in the coalition have expressed different views on zoning. While some support zoning the ticket to the South, given the current political climate and President Tinubu’s background, others believe the North should have a chance.

Notable figures vying for the presidential ticket include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The party’s eventual decision will likely depend on various factors, including the candidates’ popularity, their ability to rally support, and the party’s overall strategy for the 2027 elections.
