National Assembly to Transmit Constitution Review Report to State Assemblies Before December, Says Opeyemi
The National Assembly has announced plans to transmit the constitution review report to all 36 state Houses of Assembly before December 2025.
This move is part of efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution to address current national challenges and improve the country’s governance structure.
Senate Leader and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed this in Abuja following the conclusion of the committee’s nationwide zonal public hearings. He stated that the committee has completed consultations and is currently harmonising submissions from stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones.
Bamidele explained that the National Assembly is working towards finalising the report in the coming months to allow enough time for consideration and passage by state legislatures before the end of the year. He urged stakeholders, civil society groups, and citizens to engage and lobby their state assemblies for the adoption of key amendments when the report is transmitted.
Issues under consideration in the review include local government autonomy, state police, devolution of powers, gender inclusion, electoral reform, roles of traditional institutions, and the creation of additional states.
The senator stressed that the process is not symbolic but aimed at delivering meaningful constitutional reforms that promote national development and reflect the will of the people.
He noted that constitutional amendments require the support of at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly, urging all Nigerians to take active interest in the process to ensure timely passage of the proposals.
The National Assembly leadership has expressed confidence that the 2025 review process will lead to historic amendments capable of reshaping the nation’s political and administrative landscape.
