Lagos to Host 3-Day Musical Tribute, Tagged Noble Warrior, for Soyinka’s 91st Birthday

As Nobel Laureate and literary icon Professor Wole Soyinka approaches his 91st birthday, Lagos State is set to honour him with a grand three-day musical and theatrical tribute titled The Noble Warrior (Ẹni Ogun).

The event, described as a powerful fusion of music, dance, drama, and multimedia storytelling, is scheduled to run from July 11 to 13, 2025, at the historic Glover Memorial Hall on Lagos Island.

The production, which is now in its second edition, is the brainchild of U.S.-based Nigerian playwright and poet, Cash Onadele, popularly known as Aiye-ko-ooto. According to the organisers, the aim is to celebrate the enduring legacy of Wole Soyinka, whose work spans literature, human rights advocacy, and cultural activism.

Directed by acclaimed theatre producer Segun Adefila, with Samuel Osaze serving as Programme Director, The Noble Warrior promises a bold and immersive artistic experience. With two daily performances—a 3 p.m. matinee and a 6 p.m. “champagne show”—audiences will experience a captivating portrayal of Soyinka’s life, principles, and contributions to the global literary landscape.

This year’s edition will feature an expanded cast of 45 performers, innovative set design, and the inclusion of a souvenir booklet and branded merchandise. The event is expected to attract theatre lovers, academics, students, and admirers of Soyinka from across Nigeria and beyond.

The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is partnering with the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) to support the event, reflecting the state’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage and honouring national icons.

Organisers have also revealed plans to take the production to major Nigerian universities, beginning with the University of Lagos and potentially the University of Ibadan, offering discounted tickets for students.

The touring edition is part of a broader vision to engage the youth and introduce a new generation to the depth of Soyinka’s works and ideals.

Producer, Cash Onadele noted that the project is not just a tribute but also a “symbolic call to preserve African intellectual heritage.” He added that The Noble Warrior will become an annual fixture in Nigeria’s cultural calendar, evolving with new content and creative direction while remaining rooted in the legacy of Wole Soyinka.

As the countdown to the event begins, the theatre world and the broader Nigerian public are set to witness a profound celebration of one of Africa’s most revered literary figures.

The Noble Warrior is poised to not only honour Soyinka’s monumental legacy but also inspire renewed interest in the performing arts and African storytelling.
