Gumel LGA Chairman in Jigawa, Hon. Lawal Ya’u, Dies at 61

 

 

The Chairman of Gumel Local Government Council in Jigawa State, Honourable Lawal Ya’u, has died at the age of 61 after a brief illness.

He passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at a private hospital in Kano, sending waves of grief across the local government and the broader political community in the state.

Hon. Ya’u, a retired civil servant who transitioned into politics, was elected Chairman of Gumel LGA in August 2023. Known for his quiet but focused leadership style, he served as a grassroots politician committed to community development and public service.

According to family sources, the late chairman took ill a few days before his passing and was receiving treatment at a private facility in Kano before his condition deteriorated.

His death was confirmed on Saturday afternoon. In line with Islamic rites, he was buried the same day in his hometown, Gumel, surrounded by family, political associates, and community members.

He is survived by two wives and several children.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the state, with residents, council officials, and political figures expressing sorrow over his untimely death.

Many described him as a man of integrity and humility who prioritized local development, rural infrastructure, and welfare programs during his short but impactful tenure.

The government of Jigawa State is expected to issue an official statement and make arrangements to fill the leadership void at the Gumel council level in accordance with local government administrative procedures.

Hon. Lawal Ya’u’s death marks the end of a dedicated life of service, both as a civil servant and an elected public official.

His contributions to grassroots governance in Jigawa will be remembered by many within and beyond Gumel Local Government Area.
